When you make the decision to get a non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment – whether fillers, anti-wrinkle treatment, Profhilo, or chemical peels – it’s tempting to search the term “aesthetics before and afters” to get a good idea of what results you can expect. But there are several problems that come with that. Read on to find out more…
Aesthetics before and afters: the key issues
Perhaps you’ve been considering an aesthetic treatment for a while. You’ve done your research on what happens during said treatment. You’ve been looking around for the right practitioner for you. And now you’re thinking about what results that treatment might give you.
So, you head to Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Google to find aesthetics before and afters. But here are several reasons why that’s not the best idea…
1. Lighting and angles
Often, when I see aesthetics before and afters by other clinics, I’m shocked at the difference between the lighting in the before image and the after image. In so many instances, the lighting is brighter and more flattering in the second image, giving the impression that the result is much better than it actually is.
The same can be said for camera angles. In the before image, the angle of the patient’s face is so often different to the after picture, meaning it’s impossible to get a true indication of how exactly the patient now looks.
2. Make-up and airbrushing
As well as camera angles and lighting, another issue I often see when looking at online aesthetics before and afters is that very often, in the before image, the patient has absolutely no make-up on at all (we generally need patients to be make-up free for their treatment). But then, in the after photo, they’re wearing a lot of make-up, which, of course, emphasises their beauty further, making it difficult for the untrained eye to see what’s down to the treatment and what’s the result of the make-up.
Not only this, but some aesthetics before and afters also appear to be airbrushed, which completely goes against what we should be doing in the aesthetics industry and which leads to disappointment and mistrust.
3. Skin differences
While the issues above are concerning, the most concerning problem for me, when it comes to aesthetics before and afters, is unrealistic expectations. We are all different. Some with dry skin, some with oily skin, some with youthful skin, some with more mature skin, some with deep-set wrinkles, some with fine lines, some with deeper eye troughs, some with less collagen.
So, it’s really difficult – based solely on a photo – to gauge whether a treatment is right for you and whether it will give you those same results that you see online. I’ve spoken to many people who had previously seen aesthetics before and after images and expected to have exactly the same results as the person in the photo. But that’s just not possible. From skin to bone structure, we’re all unique, so we can’t be compared so simply to someone else without taking a whole lot of factors into consideration.
For instance, if you’re a fifty-year-old woman, and you see a photo of a twenty-year-old woman who’s had a chemical peel, and you like those results, things to consider are: my skin is no longer as plump as hers, I have more lines and wrinkles than her, I might have a different skin type (i.e. oily, dry…).
Manage your expectations
I completely understand that people want to look at aesthetics before and afters. Of course! But the most important thing for me is that you manage your expectations when looking at aesthetics before and afters, as thinking that you’ll get exactly the same results will often lead to disappointment and sometimes regret.
It may be the case that the treatment before and after is not actually the treatment that would give you the best results, and that there’s another one that would give you exactly the results you’re looking for.
Why don’t I share aesthetics before and after online
Coming from a medical background, I’ve always been a believer that the patients who come to my clinic deserve their privacy. For that reason, I don’t post images of them on my social media or anywhere else. Many people come to me not wanting others to know that they get treatments, and that’s their prerogative, so the last thing I’m going to do is take before-and-after images of them to publish online. Their time at Craig Hobson Aesthetics is about them feeling good, not about me marketing my services.
However, if someone comes in specifically for a modelling session, where they have received the treatment for free, and the session is for marketing purposes, I do use those aesthetics before and after images online. But I always make it very clear that this was a modelling session.
I do also have a portfolio of before-and-afters that I share in the clinic. This allows me to explain what treatments have been done, and what you can expect if you try it for yourself.
So, by all means, take a look around at online aesthetics before and afters, but always keep in mind that they A) may have been tampered with, B) might not be accurate due to lighting, camera angles and make-up, C) the person in the images has different skin and features to you, meaning the results won’t be exactly the same on you.

How SPF a day keeps the wrinkles at bay

Have you applied your SPF today? Even on a grey day, putting on your sun cream is a must. Yes, that’s right; it isn’t just for holidays! In this post, I’ll explain why wearing SPF, daily, will help you look younger for longer, the true impact of sun on your skin, and what to look for in a good SPF.
How the sun affects our skin
We all love the sun. That warming sensation and gorgeous glow we get from it. Summer finally rolls around, and we’re outside as quick as you can say “flip-flop” (we have to make the most of it in the UK, right?). But how many of us can honestly say that we wear SPF each and every day?
Before we take a look at SPF and why we should all be wearing it more often, it’s important to understand the huge impact the sun has on our skin and what exactly you’re protecting yourself from. You see, the sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation – in particular 2 types that affect our skin: UVA rays and UVB rays.
DNA damage
We’ll start with the one we’re probably all familiar with – even if you don’t realise it. UVB rays are the ones we’re all taught to protect ourselves from. These are the rays that can burn us and cause direct DNA damage to our skin cells. This, in turn, can lead to skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
Premature ageing
What you might not realise is that the sun’s UVA rays are also responsible for photoageing. These rays penetrate our skin on a deeper level than UVB rays, and increase free radicals that damage our collagen and elastin fibres. This means skin loses its firmness, starts to sag more quickly, and we see more signs of ageing, such as increased wrinkles. And…UVA rays are able to pierce through clouds and pour in through our windows, meaning that you need to be covered even on a cloudy day. Even if you’re at home or in the car.
Thankfully, using a great sunscreen will help protect you from these harmful rays. But what exactly is SPF, and how does it work?
What is SPF?
SPF: three little letters we often hear – mostly in the summer. But sunscreen isn’t just for hot days and holidays. Instead, we should be applying it every morning, and topping it up on a regular basis.
SPF stands for sun protection factor, and serves to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays.
As you would expect, the higher the factor, the more protection from the sun’s rays. So if, for instance, you buy an SPF that’s factor 50, you’re better protected than if you wear SPF30. It technically comes down to how much time you can stay in the sun once your sunscreen’s been applied.
Anything below SPF30 is generally not considered high enough to keep you protected from these harmful rays.
What does SPF do?
So, now you know what SPF is, but what exactly does it do? Here are a handful of reasons why you’ll want to make sure it becomes a key part of your daily skin care routine…
Protection from UV radiation
Good SPF coverage helps shield skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of sunburn, photoaging, and skin cancer.
Preventing skin damage
Regular use of SPF prevents collagen breakdown, maintaining skin’s firmness, elasticity, and overall health.
Long-term skin health
Consistent application of SPF slows down the ageing process, preserving the skin’s youthful appearance and reducing the likelihood of developing sun-induced pigmentation and wrinkles.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there regarding SPF, so here are a few things worth noting…
The SPF in your makeup isn’t enough
You might be thinking, “Ah, it’s OK; There’s SPF in my daily foundation.” But, unfortunately, the SPF within other products, such as makeup, doesn’t give enough coverage, and is often too low to protect against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. So, it’s best to find a good sunscreen that will keep you covered every day.
Top up your SPF every 2 hours
It’s not just a case of apply and forget with sunscreen. In fact, with most, you’ll want to reapply every couple of hours to get maximum coverage.
There are different types of SPF
You may have heard of two different types of sunscreen: mineral sunscreen and chemical sunscreen, but you are not quite sure what the difference is.
Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds like oxybenzone and avobenzone, which absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, releasing it from the skin.
Though generally thin and easy to apply, they can lead to irritation.
Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use inorganic compounds such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to act as physical barriers, reflecting and scattering UV radiation.
These sunscreens are often thicker and can leave a white cast on the skin.
SPF should be a daily step in your skincare routine
Making SPF a key part of your daily skincare routine is really one of the most effective things you can do – not just when it comes to protecting your skin from sunburn, but also to protect it from premature ageing.

Skincare: it’s a journey, not a quick fix

If you spend a lot of time on social media, you’ll likely have seen countless skincare hacks, promising to perfect your “flaws” in an instant.
But can you really improve your skin that quickly?
Honestly, no. While there are some treatments that provide instant results, these are generally fillers, not treatments that tackle specific skincare issues.
So, what should you expect on your journey to great skin?

How long will it take to reach my skin goals?
How long your journey to incredible skin will take really depends on your skin.
It’s a very personal thing and one that we can only really determine once we’ve sat and had a chat about what it is you’re looking to achieve.
Everyone is different, with unique skin needs, so it’s impossible for me to sit here and tell you that your skin will be exactly as you want it to be in a matter of weeks or months. And that’s why it worries me when I see so many people online promising the Earth before they’ve even seen the skin of the person reading their post or watching their video.
What to expect from a skincare consultation
As a medical professional, I always urge people to go for a proper skincare consultation, and, in my clinic, I use consultations as a chance to get a full picture of what a patient’s main concern is. For some, it might be a skin condition such as rosacea, where they’d like to reduce redness.
For others, it might be that they want to minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Others might want to reduce pigmentation.
Once I understand what it is they want to do, then I can use my vast medical and skincare expertise to help them build a skincare routine that works and is tailored specifically to their needs – perhaps even discussing the possibility of skin treatments that are known to work on that particular skin concern if I think it will be of benefit to them. But it’s important to note that it’s not an overnight win. Great skin takes time and patience.
How long will it take to see skincare results?
Again, this really comes down to you and your individual skincare goals… and realistic expectations. What I can tell you is that one thing everyone’s skin does have in common is our natural skin cell turnover. This is where new skin cells form and move to the surface, replacing dead ones.
The cycle takes anywhere between roughly 28 days and 45 days, but this could be more or less, depending on various factors such as age.
Then, dead skin cells naturally slough off the surface every three months or so.
During this time, the key is to be consistent with your personalised skincare products, allowing the active ingredients within them to tackle your concerns and improve your skin’s appearance, providing additional care, such as boosting cell renewal and protecting from environmental damage.
Regular exfoliation (1-3 times a week) can aid in removing dead skin cells, allowing the active ingredients in skincare products to penetrate more effectively and work their magic. While some improvements can be seen within a few weeks, achieving the full benefits of a skincare routine may take several months.
Maximising your skincare results
Sometimes, it might be the case that the use of multiple skincare products or treatments will lead to a better outcome.
This is where choosing the right aesthetic practitioner will really pay off. Someone who has working medical experience with skin, skin conditions, and a range of medical treatments will be able to advise you carefully.
Choose someone you feel comfortable with.
Someone who isn’t just interested in pocketing your money but respects their duty of care to provide you with what they believe will work best for you and your needs.
Whether it’s a course of treatments or a combination of treatments and skincare products, mixing multiple solutions (as long as done safely), can have incredible results.
Key things to remember on your path to great skin
As the title suggests, skin care isn’t a quick fix. It physiologically can’t be, despite what you see on TikTok. But it can – and should be – a wonderful journey; a journey that will help you uncover your own beautiful skin.
Remember to always visit a medical expert who can provide you with the correct advice and best skincare products or treatment plans based on your individual needs.
Let them know exactly what it is you want to achieve so that they can deem whether that is realistic.
Then, don’t forget to stick to the routine you’re advised to follow. While it may take some time to see results, with dedication and patience, the wait will be well worth it.

Normalising aesthetics: why it’s not all about big lips

There’s a perception in the media – and, as a result, the wider public – that aesthetics are bad, and that if you want to age gracefully, you mustn’t touch them.
After all, if you even step into an aesthetics clinic, you automatically come out with big lips and a frozen forehead, right? Wrong! Unfortunately, this is what we’ve been made to think, through a culmination of factors.
So, what is the situation really like?
Are aesthetic treatments really the enemy?
Well, my aim is to dispel the myths and normalise aesthetics, and to show people that it’s a journey well worth travelling, if that’s what they choose. Read on to find out more…
Aesthetic treatments: Where did it all go wrong?
Once upon a time (i.e. the 90s), aesthetic treatments were just for the rich and famous. In recent years, though, they have become more and more accessible to all, meaning great skin and fresher looking faces are in reach – if that’s what you choose.
However, this – along with a severe lack of regulations regarding who should be performing aesthetic treatments – has led to an increase in non medics deciding to turn their hand at a career in minimally invasive treatments, opening up their own clinics and attracting younger and younger people who want to look like their favourite celebs.
The problem is multifold. You see, the increase in more people seeking out treatments (and the increase in TV personalities openly discussing their treatments) has led to a boom in people from nonmedical backgrounds picking up needles (some of them TV personalities themselves), training over the course of a weekend and opening up their own clinics. Terrifying to say the least, but as there are no solid regulations in place, as yet, this has been allowed to continue for years.
Then, because Sandra down the road has only spent a fraction of time training, and doesn’t have the medical know-how to fix complications (and there are many things that can go wrong if not done by someone who has a sound understanding of what they are doing), this leads to images of botched lips all over the pages of newspapers, magazines and social media.
So, it’s understandable that people have begun to associate aesthetic treatments with danger and, in some cases, disfigurement). Because they only see bad images.
Or so they think…
Good aesthetic results are undetectable
It’s likely that we all know at least someone who’s had some aesthetic treatments. I’m not talking celebrities; I’m talking friends, family, colleagues…
You probably just haven’t noticed because it’s been done well.
You see, aesthetic treatments results should be undetectable. That’s not to say they shouldn’t result in any difference at all. It simply means you should just look fresher.
They should be subtle tweaks (that’s why they’re often referred to as tweakments), not dramatic changes to your face.
The increase in people seeking out the latter is part of the wider problem, but, thankfully, this is slowly starting to change, with many choosing to dissolve overfilled lips and cheeks and returning to a more natural look.
Stay away from trends
I always do a consultation before performing any aesthetic treatment, and always seek to discover what a client really wants to achieve before even touching a needle or device. If they’re simply looking to follow a current trend, I try to determine why and advise them against it.
As a medical professional, my role is to provide expert advice and help you achieve realistic results that only serve to enhance your already beautiful features, not change you. I understand that there are people out there who will do exactly that, but that goes against what I and many others in the industry stand for. So, I’d advise anyone out there to steer clear of trends.
At the very most, they’ll only provide momentary satisfaction.
Focus on your face and your needs only
As with trends, I advise my patients only to focus on what you are looking to achieve, not what you have seen on others. Keep your focus on your own skin goals. Do you want to reduce the appearance of line and wrinkles? Add a touch of volume where you have naturally lost some? Tackle uneven skin?
If a patient comes to me with a photo of someone else, I always take the time to explain that we are each different and there are many factors that go into achieving a particular result.
Age, skin type…they each play a role. So, for instance, if a woman in her 50s comes to me and brings a photo of a woman in her 20s with beautiful lips and ‘flawless’ skin, I always explain that she simply won’t get that same look. However, that we can work to get more realistic results that are more tailored to her wants and needs.
It’s very important never to compare yourself to anyone else. You’re beautiful as you are – aesthetic treatments simply serve to subtly enhance what you already have.
Aesthetics isn’t just about needles
Another misconception is that aesthetic treatments simply means needles, but, in reality, it’s so much more than this.
From chemical peels and LED light therapy to electro stimulation technology and supplements, there’s a myriad of incredible solutions that can provide great results. It all comes down to what your individual needs are and what will work best to get you those results.
Aesthetics is a journey, not a quick win
Finally, another myth within aesthetics is that it’s a case of one and done.
You come to a clinic, get a treatment done, and that’s it, you instantly look younger and more refreshed. But there’s a lot more to it than just that.
Yes, there are treatments, such as fillers, that provide instant incredible results, but they don’t last forever. And not every treatment gives you this instant outcome.
For instance, with many treatments, like LED light therapy, chemical peels and microneedling, you get the best results after a course of treatments, and collagen continues to increase in due course, not instantaneously.
Likewise, with anti-wrinkle treatments, results occur between 2 days and 2 weeks after your treatment, and last around three months.
Of course, this can vary from person to person, too. And for some, it might be a case of combining treatments to get the best results.
For me, it’s important that all my patients understand that aesthetics is a journey – and should be a joyous journey to be on, too.
There’s no quick fix with aesthetics; instead, it’s all about building on results, treatment after treatment, and focusing on your goals to achieve the best possible outcome for you and you alone.
So, let’s start normalising aesthetics and talking about the great results it can achieve when you see the right practitioner with the right accreditations.
Talking about it openly will reduce the stigma that sometimes still clouds treatments and, instead, help people to recognise that great skin is within their grasp.
It’s not something to fear as long as you have the realistic expectations and are guided and treated by someone who truly knows what they’re doing, and performs treatments safely and with a genuine care for you, not just the money you’re about to hand over.
